Zelfrelativering

Zelfrelativering?

Oz

I think the bunch of children wearing suits and ties should know better than thinking that they can run my life and that I’d believe their lies.

Plan a revolution? Change the world, wanting all there is to get, buying shares and getting rich? Maybe I should just move. To Moscow. Moscow, Idaho. Or to my adolescent memories.

New music from around the corner

My sympathy for The Futureheads grew through interviews all telling how a (very) promising band gets dropped by music company, decides not to give in, remains true. And delivers a great album. So I got out to get This Is Not The World.

Asked myself Will the heads of the future be foilish? to find that this is only the beginning of my twist. A real ENERGY boost of pointy pop against an (old) wave background and flashing riffs. From the slipstream of Franz Ferdinand and Kaizer Chiefs this band has grown an identity! My legs respond in a curious way. Is this… dancing?

Also got fascinated by Coldplay‘s complete Vision on Design for Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends (from album to clothes). Natural fan of epic, it still took extended sound(scapes) and more reserved vocals to finally convince me. And the ambitious title of course (kinda reminds of Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness).

And, yes, I finally bought my first Coldplay. And did not regret. The album is absolutely brilliant in its (U2-esque) Grandeur (those backing choirs and guitar sweeps). Now here’s an honest and emotional stadion band.

Forth by The Verve starts strong, but culminates too soon with the samplistic, majestic Love Is Noise. I miss emotional urgency, drama, sharp lyrics. It’s a long jam-trance experience, lots of epic weeping, too freestylish. But… predictable after the Thaw Sessions.

And still, I’ve fallen deeply in love with it. The album won’t let me go somehow (if I keep skipping “Numbness”). Must be Magic.

Please note that all three albums come environmentally correctly sleeved…

New Brett Anderson “Wilderness” (digitally) out

The follow-up to Brett Anderson‘s 1st (self-titled) solo album Wilderness is now available in digital stores. Perfect mother’s day gift for Moekie.

September will see the physical release, and probably I won’t be able to resist it (although iTunes kindly included the booklet ànd a bonus track).

fyi: my wife and I were dedicated Suede fans. Glam-trash drama. We went to a lot of their electrifying live shows. Dog Man Star is one of our all-time favourites, with The 2 Of Us as the opening dance of our wedding. We liked the projects of original band mate Bernard Butler, solo (2 albums) and with McAlmont (soul heroes for 2 albums). But the return of the duo as The Tears (2005) did not bring back all of the old magic.

After Brett‘s 1st solo album, we saw him play brilliantly in the Botanique in Brussels (with Suede’s Mat Osman). We enjoyed the electrical new and Suede tracks, but were ecstatic about the unexpected, but incredible acoustic (solo) performance. It certainly revealed an unexplored, pure side to the Suede songs, structures and lyrics, but also unleashed the ‘new’ artist in Brett.

Upon that experience we purchased the exclusive acoustic Live at Union Chapel recording. And the succeeding concerts with a string ensemble (still available here) seem to have finally inspired him to write and record new songs (in 7 days) with no more than a cellist as main compagnon:

Nietzsche (‘god is dood, Elvis leeft‘). …Iemand een paard gezien?

The Last Shadow Puppets’ Understatement

Cinematic maneuvers in my brain and wild horses. Widescreen audio. Rumbling drums. Gainsbourg-like orchestrations. Room to wander. Ecstatic backing voices. The London touch of symphonia. Bigger drums. Offenders.

I don’t think anyone would have expected these collected guys, known as The Last Shadow Puppets, to produce a work like The Age Of the Understatement. Although on second thought, maybe not based upon the hyperkinetics of The Arctic Monkeys. But hey, what about their clever songs and witty lyrics?

The boys with different strategies
Talking about an understatement
Only the truth they reckon they hold

From 1994 to 2008 (Pandemonial relevance)

In 1994 (1) I got to know Stabbing Westward at the Pukkelpop festival.

-by the way, my first visit ever to Pukkelpop was in 1987, the bill including Nitzer Ebb, Big Black, Wire, The Mission. The latter were covered in mud. I remember Wayne Hussey sneering “If you wanna hear the Sisters of Mercy, go home and play a record” when the audience requested “Alice”. My black days, yeah-

(2) Killing Joke released the devastating Pandemonium album (I also have the 4 EP’s). During their performance in Brussels, Stabbing Westward opened for Killing Joke. I was so overwhelmed by SW (so good, so loud) that KJ’s exorcising event of tribal beauty even passed me by.

But I will make up for that past mistake by going to see them play the Pandemonium album again in the AB in 2008 (September 30).

NIN are giving away an album (again)

I previously reported (read it here) on Nine Inch Nails making available their Ghosts album for a symbolic price. By the way, although it is a completely instrumental thing, the material is fantastic. It is a real master piece.

Surprisingly, not only do they already have a new album, The Slip, but they are even giving it away for free (click the album title). So don’t hesitate, and start downloading, because Trent says “This one is on me” and adds the kind request to give it away and spread the news.

Capo, thanks for the tip…

Toch niet hèlemaal de Diva

Een kameraad sinds jeugdtijden nam ons mee naar de première van A Tribute To The Diva door Leah Thys in de Koningin Elisabethzaal in Antwerpen. “The Diva” verwijst naar Marlene Dietrich.
