Gunther Verheyen is an independent Scrum Caretaker on a journey of humanizing the workplace (with Scrum) — a connector, teacher, writer, speaker. He thinks, reflects, wonders and wanders. He teaches, assists, serves, advices and suggests on many things Scrum. He works with teams, individuals and executives. He facilitates learning and unlearning. He continuously looks out for improved ways to serve and to deliver value to people interested in Scrum across the world.
Gunther started practicing Scrum in 2003, has published two best-selling books about Scrum, has partnered with Ken Schwaber, co-creator of Scrum, and has worked with diverse teams and organizations. The services he offers build on these accumulated experiences. Ullizee-Inc is his business vehicle.
Gunther helps organizations with the adoption of Scrum as a product delivery framework. His experience however shows that maximizing the enterprise benefits realized with Scrum takes more. It requires integrating an additional, concurrent track of change that consists of emerging new, more Agile, organizational structures around Scrum.
Gunther has created and delivered countless custom workshops and classes for the individuals, teams and organizations he has engaged with. He obtained his license as a Professional Scrum Trainer for Scrum.org from Ken Schwaber, co-creator of Scrum, in 2011. His company, Ullizee-Inc, is a member of the Professional Training Network of Scrum.org.

The journey of an independent Scrum Caretaker
Gunther ventured into IT and software development after graduating as Industrial Engineer in electronics in 1992. His Agile adventures started with eXtreme Programming and Scrum in 2003. Seven years of dedication followed; years of practicing Scrum in diverse domains with various teams. In 2010 Gunther became the inspiring force behind some large-scale enterprise transformations. In 2011 he became a Professional Scrum Trainer for Scrum.org.
Gunther left consulting in 2013 to establish Ullizee-Inc and partner exclusively with Ken Schwaber, co-creator of Scrum. He managed the “Professional Scrum” series and shepherded Scrum.org’s global network of Professional Scrum Trainers. Gunther co-created Agility Path, EBM (Evidence-Based Management) and the Nexus framework for Scaled Professional Scrum.
In 2016 Gunther decided to continue his journey to humanize the workplace as an independent Scrum Caretaker–a connector, teacher, writer, speaker. Gunther aspires helping organizations to re-imagine their Scrum to create a more humane and thereby more productive environment.
Gunther created the acclaimed book “Scrum – A Pocket Guide” in 2013. A second edition was published in 2019 and the third edition in 2021. Ken Schwaber recommends it as “the best description of Scrum available”. In 2020 Gunther published the book “97 Things Every Scrum Practitioner Should Know”, a collection of essays from field experts across the world. Several translations of his work are available.
When not travelling for Scrum and humanizing the workplace, Gunther lives and works in Antwerp, Belgium with his wife Natascha (Atelier Ullizee) and their 3 kids.

Ullizee, what’s in a name

Enter… the world of Ullizee
De illusie van Ulysses aan Zee
The illusion of Ulysses by the sea
Een blog in de talen van een wereld,
over meningen en niemendal,
weinig meer dan hunkering, want
ik ben een luis een nul nihil,
maar als ge niet oppast,
kruip ik in uw pels.
If I may, I’ll speak in tongues
or try some English
…maybe it’ll end up just the same
(of zolang ‘tinternet duurt / Internet timing)
Lees en volg op mijn blog wat ik denk te weten van Scrum, welke boeken ik las of van plan ben te lezen en wie weet hier en daar een eigen schrijfsel, het bezinksel van een bezeten geest, een uiting van poëzie.
